Gotheran
I've made a few posts discussing how disappointing in general I find summer, especially in DST with the inclusion of Antlion as its a very rigid and demanding mechanic to force the player to make the pilgrimage to either eliminate her or appease her all season. An idea then dawned on me to shift Antlions focus away from making annoying potholes in your base and instead have her intrinsically tied to the sandstorm that's native to her desert, as summer draws on sandstorms can occur outside of the oasis desert unless Antlion is appeased or defeated, these sandstorms could be ignored with the use of desert goggles and would come and go in regional waves not unlike moonstorms with a focus of spawning in areas inhabited by player built structures. In turn any player structures caught in a sandstorm would slowly accumulate a sandy pile that prevents the structure from working, the player could then manually dig them out by hand as a slow but free method of handling the problem, or dug out with a shovel for a quicker but tool costing method, more still other tools like the luxury fan and even weather pain could be used instantly clean structures. Sand piles could also accumulate randomly on the ground and be cleared to have a small chance at stone flint or nitre but disappear soon after summers end or after sufficient rainfall. As for caves sand could accumulate around stairwells and skylights but not appear in areas with no surface view making cave basing a valid and not painful way to avoid or deal with Antlion, and sandstorms would not effect ocean tiles outside of a small distance from the mainland with other islands being outside of Antlions influence entirely, unless for some reason they spawned within visual distance from the mainland. TL;DR Change Antlion to spawn sandstorms not sink holes Sandstorms accumulate sand on structures disabling them Sand can be cleaned by hand or tools Sandstorms localized and move around Caves and Ocean largely unaffected Increase in player agency in dealing with Antlion without having to deal with her directly.
