Confirmation button required before world reset

Recommended Posts

After losing a second long term singleplayer survival world because closing my laptop didn't pause the game or disconnect me from the server, I think it would be useful to add a button that must be pressed by the server owner before the world resets when the timer reaches 0 after you die. That would ensure that if for some reason you accidentally go afk, you still had a chance to do a rollback before they are erased along with the rest of the world. I know that making backups is a good course of action, but this would be a simple safety net in case you don't make any or the ones you have are out of date.

Losing your world because you died and didn't have any resurrection options available has always been part of what makes Don't Starve what it is, and I don't think that should change. However, I've faced the end of my world more times than I care to recall on account of some manner of shenanigans, one not all that long ago. DST at least has something you can to do protect yourself against this. Duplicating your world.

I'm not sure whether Steam or DST is to blame, but it's not uncommon for Steam to spontaneously close, without any alert message about it crashing or anything, and when it does, DST doesn't close along with it, it just hangs there, frozen on the screen, while the game actually continues playing out with out any input, or output. If allowed to close on its own a few minutes later, odds are you'll be reaching the saves lists with a freshly reset world, so it's essential to terminate DST manually whenever that happens, to prompt the server to shut down right away instead of giving any number of misfortunes the chance to find you defenseless. Last time it happened, it had been around 50 in-game days since my last backup. When some kind of corruption occurred during the Year of the Rabbit event, I lost around 200 in-game days. I now make a fresh backup every time I sit down for a session, a rolling sequence of deleting the oldest copy, and making a new copy, each time before I launch the server.

I just wish features like rollback and save duplication worked on solo Don't Starve. Sure it'd open the gates to abuse, but I'd say it's a small price to pay that some players will be wimping out of the consequences of their in-game failures to protect us all from the consequences of technology's failures.

You can do it by copying the files directly, at least in the PC version. I did that because I wanted to keep playing the save I made in the Hamlet interiors beta.
