What characters would you remove if you were forced to Thanos snap half of them away permanently?

Warly is THE farmer. Any other character gets more use out of stone fruit and or kelp.

Huh? pretty sure wormwood is the farmer, Warly has no perks related to gardening except the fruits and vegs from it, has nothing to help grow them.

I would probably prioritize not necessary my favorite characters to play, but instead the characters that require the player to play differently, that way there’s still plenty of variety in the remaining cast.

as such i’m going to have a list of keeps instead of a list of tosses.

wilson or willow are both simultaneously the faces of Dont Starve, while also being actively uninteresting to play. Only one is needed as the face, and its gotta be wilson, he’s too iconic. Willow is okay for this role but everyone knows wilson.

between the four combat characters (wendy wolfgang wigfrid and wanda)  i think wanda is the most interesting choice, while wendy is a major face of the game, and wigfrid is the favorite character of the largest part of kleis playerbase. I think those three are all worth keeping, especially since wendy is a hybrid combat and minion character.

I think either webber or wurt (one or the other) is kind of a must keep. We need one faction character. I think webber is a good choice personally due to him being one of the faces of dont starve, though i personally think wurts “village” playstyle is more interesting. 
 

Now that i’ve picked five i’d like to keep, i’d like to eliminate some from the discussion.

wx78, while he is the funny robot man, all the powers he gets are entirely passive once earned, and is very set and forget, not very interesting imho.

Winona is just not fun to play, she can build one interesting building, the catapult, and one disappointment: the spotlight. Her tape isnt a real perk, its pure early game convenience that is kind of ruined the second you get a hounds tooth and can make a regular sewing kit.

Walter, while a fun idea, kind of flops in his execution, at least to me. I only play him for the dog, the slingshot is nice for getting attention and killing small animals, but a lot of what it can do can be accomplished with a boomerang. 

now for the less easily comparable discussions.

maxwell and woodie are kind of in the same niche, combat and gathering. But if i’m going to be honest, i like woodie’s version of this dichotomy more. The transformations are so unique its a lot of fun. But maxwell is 1000% irreplaceable for the game, so woodie has to go. 
 

Warly, wickerbottom, wortox wormwood, and wes are all kind of outliers, which is why they’re last. 
I’ve chosen six to stay, and removed seven, that means that i can choose 3 from this list to keep.

wortox and wickerbottom are the obvious choices to keep. Wortox may not have the most diverse skillset, his souls lead to a lot of interesting gameplay between playing the support, cross map hopping on a whim, while simultaneously leading players to create unique farms

wickerbottom meanwhile can control the world around her in very exciting ways that no other character can replicate (no maxwell using her perks isnt him replicating it, without her, he cant do it). So i would say she’s a great pick for the “keep” list.

finally we’re down to our last three:

wes, wormwood, and warly.

now obviously I’m picking wormwood, i may be biased as he is my main, but while thinking through my decision, i still believe it to be the best one.

wes, while being the only actual challenge character, has nothing INTERESTING going on to cause that challenge, its all tedium on tedium. Weaker chops, lower damage, faster hunger and sanity drain. All of those downsides sound bad until you realize that all any of them do is make you prep more than you would normally.

You need better armor to deal with his lower health - more time invested into making armor, so just a time gate

You need more healing because the fight will last longer - again more grinding.

I mean one of his downsides is literally just harvesting slower, i’m fine with harsh downsides but thats just silly.

 

as for warly, it has nothing to do with being a “swap character” (which is a silly concept, think for yourself for 2.5 seconds and you’ll realize he isnt a swap character he just has a sharable perk) 

i’m choosing not warly because i just dont think the emergent gameplay from his recipes and food downside are as interesting as wormwoods. Warlys downside is like the easy version of wormwoods downside. You can still eat healing food, heck you can eat 20 perogis and they’ll still heal SOME. Just not much, and you can always rotate 3 or 4 meals and you’ll be fine on food. The downside just isnt that harsh or to me at least, fun. And while some recipes are cool (glowberry mousse is a favorite) many others are just not something i’m ever going to realistically reach for as a solution to a problem, am i supposed to use grim gallete to heal sanity? Health? I just don’t understand its use cases for anyone other than wormwood.

wormwoods fertilizer healing on the other hand feels very unique, rot healing means that anything that i dont eat gets repurposed, and with a compost bin, even sticks can heal me. But on the other hand, the more traditional food healing, which is more widely available, is just completely useless. It also means that otherwise poisonous foods like red mushrooms are effectively snacks i can casually grab. The red mushroom biome is a buffet, monster meat is a casual snack, and i never worry about what i’m shoving in my mouth, because it will never hurt.

sanity is also insanely easily manipulated. Not just restored, lowered easier than other characters, or stored for later if you chop down trees and hold onto the seeds. 

not to mention effectively infinite living logs, for his unique craft… AOE DAMAGE ARMOR.

yeah, that’s pretty strong, but not just that, its fairly fun to use against swarm type enemies.

oh also: aoe traps, farming being fun (and convenient) a speed boost, the best skins in the game (very relevant, i need my head to be a mushtree) plant friends (minor but its cool) easy easy access to dark swords (and any other living log craft) lets just say if i listed every minor perk wormwood had, itd be quite a long list. 

i havent even talked about his incredible perk tree because few people have theirs yet, but it was pretty sick. 
 

Final results/TLDR

keep : wilson wendy wigfrid wanda webber maxwell wickerbottom wortox and wormwood.

delete: willow wolfgang wurt wx78 winona walter woodie wes and warly

tbh webber and wurt and interchangeable for this discussion webber won on popularity, so did some others.

Warly is the farmer beause any other character gets so much more benefit for much less work by using stone fruit. Warly cant just eat monster meat and stone fruit meatballs forever (alteast, not effectively), and his special dishes (that are really gosh diddly darn good) require specific vegetables and fruits. Same with his spices. 2 of the 3 combat based ones require farm plants. The kiss on top is that Peppers, Garlic and Onions (3 of the most important veggies for Warly) all sustain eachother. Warly doesent have any tools to help him with farming, but he is also the only one encouraged to do it over using stone fruit and kelp, which is a low maintenance high sustenance food source.

Why stone fruit and kelp specifically? banana bushes exist and with the many recipe's it makes them great

Wormwood generally grows the food for the server.

as farmer implies that he is growing food, not eating it.

you can just cycle with dishs like meaty stew, meatballs, some random cheap food dish like jam or frog sandwich.

his specific dishs are great, but the 1 people pick Warly for (volt goat jelly) does not need certain plants

Stone fruit and kelp still great for him as filler and more specific dish's ( 1's with kelp)
