Some Post Beta Feedback: Skill Trees

Recommended Posts

After some retrospection, specifically with the Wilson rework, the idea of skill trees are beginning to grow on me.

The first reason is that the initial implementation of skill trees appeared to increase the speed of tuning the characters. It is possible that my time-blindness is kicking in, or other internal changes were made, but the speed and quality at which Wormwood, Woodie and Wolfgang were "Reworked" felt significantly stronger than the previous character changes. I think it goes without saying that faster updates are always appreciated.

The addition of multiplayer centered abilities is great. The previous lack of direct interaction between survivors, especially with Wolfgang and Woodie, made playing multiplayer with them a bit boring. I have high hopes that the remainder of the cast will get similar treatment, allowing me to interact with others in more meaningful ways.

Anyways, the skills we have now are neat but I think they are missing something. Skills that are extremely powerful, such as the Shadow/Lunar skills, could become vastly more interesting if whatever ability they unlocked also came at a significant cost. Ideally they would be the skills that are near the end of a tree, so that newer players don't accidentally gimp themselves because they don't know any better. I think it could be used to promote character combos that alleviate the other's downside and provide opportunities to teach the more painful mechanics to players. Assuming Wes is going to get a skill tree this could also be how he specifically obtains the insight he needs to unlock his skills. By purposefully taking "skills" that literally only cause issues for him.

I look forward to future updates.

Thank you for your work.
