I have mixed feelings about this update.

Recommended Posts

I dont even know how to start but here i am. Klei this update was really weird and unexpected, at least for me, idk about all of you here in the forum but this update actually bugs me out. I mean its not a bad update, woodie really deserved that and the others 2 character are mostly fine(lets be honest those 2 didnt even need anything new). But even if im happy about woodie i cant help but feel that this update was a mistake, and not cause skill trees are bad or something like that, it is because i was expecting something really different. In fact i was expecting an update with 2 paths for survivors(moon and shadow magic) and the final boss or arc or at least the announcement about the final of DST.

The other day i was checking the forums looking for something interesting to read and i saw a title "DST feels like an early acces game" and then i thought to myself, i think im feeling that way too(didnt read the post just the title :P). Its hard for me to express bad feelings about my fav indie game but i think i must do this before this beta ends.

I really dislike early acces games cause they feel like the content is never going to end but in a bad way, thats the reason i still dont buy sons of the forest, even if i loved the forest, mostly cause its feels like a dont starve game(ik the forest got inspired by DS).

To be honest i got this feeling since the first update about the new stuff post cc. This all just feel like it got inspired by terraria, and even if i like that game too the reality is that updating the game in that way feels really bad. You know, it is like klei made DST then they made a final boss AF, then after sometime they started with new stuff, updating old mechanics like farming or the ocean or even udpating the characteres, ok all still good, but then, suddenly they droped a new final boss... what!?!? another one?!?, ok its not that bad, but now klei after sometime droped new content and it is post final bosses... ok i buy it, mostly cause i thought to myself maybe after defeating 2 bosses we are going to unlock the true final boss and after defeating that maybe a little comic page is gonna show how the survivors escaped the constant or chose to stay(wurt and maybe others). Well i was making a big movie in my head, was expecting too much for this game i guess, and its cause DST unlike the Single player DS and all the dlcs feels unfinished, i mean DS+dlcs has the adventure mode and the potato thing that pretty much shows an end, meanwhile DST doesnt have anything like that, the lore of this game has lasting what? 6 years? and still no end... and then suddenly klei droped this "more updates to all characteres",  why!??! to make all worst i cant feel that bad or angry cause they made woodie better so yeah as you can see this is just a post to vent some feelings, im not expecting answers from klei or the user im just cant handle this.

My fav indie game(my 3rd fav game) is feeling like an early acces to me. oof i feel awful about this post but i had to say it. All i can wait right now is that klei has a plan to finish the game in some moment maybe after all the new characteres skill tress...

I just want a great end with Nona rescuing her little sister, wilson becoming a big thinker of his time, and maybe maxwell reaching the redemption.

Now for my final words i just have a request for klei, please make winona be one of the last survivos to get the a skill tree, i want her to be a good one, so the more time and experience you got after all the others skill trees the best. thanks for reading as always. :-|

I hate to say this, but I can relate to a lot of the stuff in the post. I refuse to say those things because maybe I’m numbing myself and trying to prevent myself from thinking it.

but honestly, too many untied ends and even more untied ends are being made.

Like you are seeing and smelling a delicious dish, but when you think you can eat it, you can’t. Instead, you are shown more and more delicious dishes, but can eat none of them for real. And after a while, I’m just unsatisfied and sad, despite the food in front of me looks really good.

What does a table of inedible delicious food look like? I think people who view them as finished product will complain they are not good enough. And people who know they are not ready will think it’s in early access.

While I understand the sentiment, I think that there's probably a bit of conflation with the game's story and the game as a product, if that makes some sense. Because I think that a lot of changes over the last few years have been very much to the game's benefit, even if they do feel early-access-y. Stuff like changing the crafting system, adding the scrap book, making chests be openable by multiple players at once, being able to craft using the items in chests or being held in your hand, and even the whole business of reworks happening at all. It very much feels like DST is the result of Klei trying to craft a sequel using multiplayer reign of giants as the template. And I personally don't have that much of an issue with it, because while some of the new content has definitely been poorly balanced, every update DST gets feels like one that justifies its status as a sequel rather than just "DS but multiplayer".

I think you could absolutely take issue with the story, but I also think it is perhaps a little naiive to expect a definitive ending anytime in the near future. A definitive ending is not exactly condusive to a sandbox style game, which is precisely what DS and especially DST have been for the longest time. As long as DST is successful it would not be in Klei's interest to make the game or its storyline end, nor would it be in the interests of the playerbase.

While I do agree that DST feels early access, I think a lot of that stems from the fact that it was originally a carbon copy of Don't Starve. I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of game they are crafting out of the pieces they have introduced.

You said what I wanted to say

The last few updates have been completely broken pieces of the puzzle, and just when I felt like I was about to complete the puzzle, klei pulled out pieces of another puzzle.

I always believed that klei was preparing for the final update, but I never got to see it.

i think you didnt get my post at all, my friend i dont mind about new stuff in DST, i actually liked all of the updates before all those post final bosses things, and lets be clear here, all the sandbox games that i have played actually have an end, and we can use as examples minecraft and terraria(2 of the best sandbox games out there). First Minecraft, that old game that still gets updates with new content has a final boss, and that old end dragon has been the final boss for several years, and to this days it is still the final boss(if you kill it you get the credits) and some updates even added content post ender dragon but it didnt feel bad cause the dragon was still the end to the game. Now terraria, yeah the game that never ends, that always post about how that update is the final update. It can surprise you but even terraria feels finished even if the devs drops new bosses or new mechanics it doesnt matter, the final boss is still the moonlord, so do you get my point now?

All the good sandbox games that i have played have some kind of end, and yeah even DS has the door of maxwell to "finish" the adventure of that survivor and free maxy. All of them, subnautica, valheim, the forest, its just a matter of time till DST gets a final. Gosh you know what i dare you to tell me about 3 good sandbox games that doesnt have some kind of end and please dont say subsistence or 7 days to day, those trash games that are never going to leave the early game cant be compared to my personal diamond DST. Tell you what im gonna help ya, project zomboid is a good sandbox game and to this day still doesnt have an end, now only 2 more.

And to make my point of view even more clear think that you wrote this: it is perhaps a little naiive to expect a definitive ending anytime in the near future. My friend this game has years in steam, in 3 years its gonna be a decade... just how much time do you want us to wait??, maybe my gransons are gonna enjoy the update of the final boss? think that making an end, a final boss is not going to kill the game, klei can add all the content they want, even more secrets but at least give the players a good final before that, so the game is not gonna feel like an early acces anymore.
