They do not, only hit it when they do the vine whip at me and miss. Then the fly tries to return damage but loses agro once they go underground once

Try attacking the brightshade itslef with a ranged weapon when the fly is close. He might switch the aggro to the plant. I didn't try it with the fly, but it worked on spider queen.
