Wormwood Rework/buff Idea (if he has one coming in the future)

Recommended Posts

Wormwood is one of the few Don't Starve Together characters who have not gotten a rework. this is probably because he is one of the newer characters, that being said it is unlikely he will get one at all and its more likely he will just get buffs but if you guys do plan on reworking him, I have a few ideas that you guys can change or add to what you might be already doing to him.

  • Photosynthesis meter

While being exposed to sunlight Wormwood's hunger drain would be halved or he would get a hunger regeneration (not too much to the point he won't lose hunger but enough to the point it takes 20-40% longer for his hunger to drain)

  • Osmosis

While Wormwood is submerged in rain, he gains 1 health every 5 seconds (If this idea seems too weak of a rework instead of Wormwood regenerating in rain another idea, I had was for him to regenerate while his wetness meter is active)

  • Blooming addon

When Wormwood blooms he gets a small amount of damage reduction (like 10-15%)

just throwing out some ideas for small buffs or something to add to a potential giant rework. wormwood is a pretty balanced character in my opinion but if you guys have some plans for him consider some of these ideas.

Yea Klei is not really doing there characters justice like for example Webber’s rework was falling short to say the least  which is sad because with a few tweaks it could of been beautiful in his character description they say he cares very deeply about his friends human or otherwise so when befriended spiders dis in range of him there should be a sanity lose especially in a game where you can lose sanity at the slightest dis comfort

i go more in-depth in my post

so feel free to check it out after this wormwood one you got here and ignore the monkey picture of the link I think it was my first picture posted on it in anticipation for finding out about the moonkey  update

How about this?

Wormwood can achieve a state of photosynthetic regeneration, restoring all stats over time at a rate similar to health/sanity while sleeping, when: Wormwood is wet, the sun is out (not raining, not evening/night), and Wormwood is standing on plantable terrain. If all conditions are met, this would enable a prompt to 'root', and would require remaining motionless. The effect is boosted if Wormwood is blooming or if on nutrient-rich garden soil, all the more so if both. This is counterbalanced by Wormwood regaining his terrible combustibility from Hamlet, but only when he's completely dry.

As for my own idea that I've probably pitched half a dozen times now, I'd love to see Wormwood gain the ability to propagate plants that otherwise can't be manually created. Some health (or living logs, amount may vary between plants), some compost wrap, and the plant's product to create a new plant that's considered naturally rooted upon planting (that is, doesn't require periodic fertilization like transplanted plants), but loses that quality if later dug up and replanted. Grass tufts, saplings, berry bushes (maybe add a way to convert bushes between normal, exotic, and juicy variants), mushrooms, and pretty much any other plant could be produced this way. Light plants and mushtrees would probably have to be restricted to underground.

I adore Wormwood with all my heart. If you look at all of the refreshes they distinctly keep the thematic of the character and improve upon it.
Examples: Woodie is cursed - give him more forms; WX upgrades with gears - change upgrades from gears to circuits; Wickerbottom uses books - More books; Wolfgang gets strong from eating - Tie strength to working out, if wolfgang is hungry the strength decreases faster.
Simple things like that the core thematic of the character stays the same while the actual gameplay changes slightly with some buffs here and there (Wendy and her interaction with abigail being more supportive with Ectoherbology, or Maxwell gaining a new ability in his book and buffing his Duelists).

So, if you are going to bring up a Wormwood refresh I think it is best to focus on the core Identity of Wormwood and what our viney friend does: 1) Cannot heal/hurt from food. In the Reap What You Sow update, Wormwood was granted the ability to heal himself with many more versions of fertilizer besides manures. This gives Wormwood a whole host of alternative options for healing while keeping the core theme of not being able to heal from food.
2) Wormwood is a Plant: because of this WW isn't negatively affected by rain sanity wise. Just like Wurt you still freeze faster but plant's aren't meant to really grab onto things super tightly, as such his hands slip. The main core of this theme of him being a plant is he relates to them. As such seeing plants die drains sanity, while seeing plants birthed restores. Wormwood also need not use a Hoe for planting, making gardening and farming care become cheap and a powerful tool for food with low maintenance compared to every other character. Hostile plants are by default neutral.
Lastly he also takes more damage from fire (though I think bringing back the flammability from fires would be a welcome addition)
3) Wormwood Blooms: By default WW blooms in spring gaining a massive speed boost, the ability to instantly talk to nearby farm plants (thanks to the RWYS) at the cost of increased hunger drain. Speaking of RWYS you can now more easily activate blooming state outside of spring compared to only having the Compost Wrap.
4) Green Thumb Tab: This is where if a refresh of wormwood were to come into play, it would be here. Currently you have the 4 crafts unique to the viney buddy. With the buff to the Bramble Husk making it better (though more costly) to the Log Suit, it is actually a surprisingly useful item. Bramble Traps are quite useful to hounds though I feel the current damage to walls and fences really limits this in terms of functionality. Compost wrap is a relatively cheap with the largest cost being the Nitre for a powerful heal and bloom effect though it is best used outside of combat. Oh and Living Logs which in combination with his insane sanity manipulation allows Wormwood to have practically on demand dark swords. Something no one else can do without rigorous time farming for Living Logs.

All in all I don't think Wormwood is in need or even deserves a refresh. Yes it is always fun to get new toys to play with your favorite character but I think some more important changes and additions to the game and needed well before Klei even considers Wormwood. If or when Klei does ever decide to take a look at Wormwood I doubt they would do anything besides add a few more crafts to the Green Thumb tab.
Apologies for the long rant. I absolutely adore Wormwood and have spent the majority of my time in DST playing as him. I understand the desire for new things but at least from one person to another, I feel Wormwood is in an excellent spot and needs no major buffs/changes outside of changing how Bramble Traps affect walls or up to 3 new Green Thumb crafts.
