What should I choose from Across the Obelisk, Griftlands, and Monster Train?

Have you played a lot of STS? If so, I'm looking for a new deck-building game. I figured I could receive some guidance from this. What would you advise to people who have played them, then? Across the Obelisk, Monster Train, or Griftlands? Thanks

I have not played Across the Obelisk.

Monster Train is fun in that you have a lot of control over the deckbuilding, so it's easier to make overpowered setups. A knock-on effect is that the enemy scales really quickly so that they have any hope of remaining a challenge, so there's somewhat less room for wacky experimentation outside abusing multipliers. They do have some very original ideas for the mechanics of some factions, that's definitely a big plus. There's DLC too, but I haven't tried it. Coming from STS, it's just a zanier, wackier version of that, and generally easier.

Griftlands has a much stronger focus on light role-playing. There is a story for each of the three main characters, and the choices you make (mainly which factions you side with) have an effect on the cards you have access to, and sometimes on the bosses you fight. You can also recruit people to help you with difficult fights. Each run takes at least twice as long as STS, quite a bit more if you read the story (there's a fair amount to read, but you'll see most that isn't random events after two runs per character). I would say the different archetypes for each character aren't super balanced against each other, but the strategy is less centralizing than in Monster Train. Griftlands' difficulty level is probably somewhere between STS and Monster Train, though there is meta progression that helps (the highest difficulty level turns meta-progression benefits off, though).

Hello! Haven't checked the forums in a bit, since there were no news, and I was a bit burnt out from the game. Still check it occasionally, I have fond memories of the Early Access discussions.

Yeah there doesn't seem to be anything going on, officially at least. Most of the fandom activities seem to move on to discord.

Well, at least a couple of mods have come out, like the Arint mod. I am still working on the Democratic Race mod, but that is not going to finish any time soon.
