Electroely
I've spent the past couple of worlds I played in messing around with Nautopilots. I think the idea of a boat base with multiple boats moving together is really cool. And I think the Nautopilots do a nice job of it already, but I think there's two main problems that make it unnecessarily clunky or inconvenient. The magnets are barely strong enough to keep a boat caught up with one using a single mast. The speed limit isn't an issue though, as I can understand being limited to one mast's worth of speed if you're hauling multiple boats at once, but any time the front boat does anything more than a 45 degree turn the other boats serve off into the distance before slowly catching up. They're very liable to crashing into sea stacks or what-have-you, and are usually too far to jump to and row. The other problem is that stopping the boat train is always a hassle. If you drop the anchor too suddenly you get yourself a few leaks, so you have to close the mast and let the board drift to a stop every time you need to do something that involves keeping the boat still, like fishing or jumping to land. The first problem is easy to solve - just increase force & catchup speed of the magnet. I doubled them through a mod alongside a slight increase to the max velocity (2.5 -> 3) and found the result to be perfect - the only time the boats start to drift apart is when you do a U-turn or if you row with a driftwood oar or Malbatross beak. The second problem is more complicated. The magnet itself does not have any way of reducing the boat's velocity as far as I know. Maybe a "repel" mode (like the other thing magnets do) or a built-in anchor mechanism could work well for solving this problem, especially if the current minimum distance of 1 unit between boats is increased accordingly.
