Character tweaks to change everything

Recommended Posts

Given discourse on a lot of character changes and recent ones making 2 characters, more or less, a lot more powerful than before, I've wanted to lay out some interesting suggestions for other characters that I have ideas for to make them more on par with them. The idea here is to give perks that would make you want to play as those characters continuously, not just do a switch, do a thing, then switch back type of deal while keeping them uniquely powerful and fun, hopefully.

The drawbacks are also mentioned as part for the course. I have noted down what I would see the character's ranking after such updates as well. The point is to make all characters at least somewhat unique and in line with their design and personality while giving you an interesting drawback to play with so as to not destroy them. Most characters peaking at S or A tier as some might consider ranking them in such a way, I think is ideal to give a fair deal all round instead of just playing as Wanda most of the time.

Spoiler

Winona (S tier)
* Make tape repair most armors and weapons, maybe even to repair burnt buildings, but only Winona can use it
* Tape should be infinite durability, if she crafts a sewing kit, it should be replaced by the tape, other characters picking up tape would transform it to a sewing kit again
* Everything to cost half the resources to craft as Winona by default, even less so with her wearing a construction amulet
* Avoiding every other hit from Charlie when in the dark seems ok I suppose

* Her main drawback could be that she is unwilling to craft or work at all if hungry and starving instead of the weird hunger drain mechanic, though that could be seen as removing all her perks entirely as the downside given the context so I'm not quite positive on this one

Willow (A tier)
* Overheating immunity (cap temperature to 60 or so for example), besides wildfires, would make summer a breeze to play as her
* Make her lighter infinite durability, if she crafts a torch, it should be replaced by the lighter, and it's an item only she can equip and carry
* Allow her to extinguish full fires, unlike how other characters can just extinguish smoldering things
* Bernie does not need to be just another combat follower, remove the huge form, make it automatically attract all shadow creatures of all types, the damage they deal to bernie should be dealt to the shadows directly
* Freezing could also slow down her movement in addition to losing more health over time

Few additional changes to fire as a combat tactic to accompany the tweaks
* Rework fire damage weapons to no longer turn all loot to ashes if a mob dies while set on fire, maybe just set any loot to cooked if it's a food item
* Make all fire weapons deal a decent amount of damage by default (fire dart in single player mode deals 50 damage per dart for example, that could be brought back and also added for the fire staff)
* Willow should deal x2 or more damage when using fire weapons

WX-78 (S tier)
* Ability to extend module slots to 12
* Limit each module type possible to insert to 3, so you don't slot all 12 with the same module type
* Drawback is insanely damaging as is, I have a love-hate relationship with it at the moment as the damage from water drains charge, meaning that it can nullify all the buffs too, which isn't great

Wickerbottom (S tier)
* New book to petrify all evergreens on screen, or add this ability to the Moon Grimore book as addition to it
* Buff Arachnophobia book
* Set all book durability to 5 for simplicity's sake
* Condense books that serve the same or similar purpose (Horticulture Abridged/Applied Silviculture/  as well as Lux Aeterna/Lux Aeterna), they can confuse the hell out of new players and serve to nerf their effects for no real reason

* Make sleeping items like tent, straw roll and fur roll have increased if not infinite durability, this would make the inability to sleep as the character a much more significant drawback by comparison

Walter (B tier)
* Remove perk soup (no special tent, rather buff existing sleeping items, no sanity gain standing near trees)
* Buff damage OR fire rate of the slingshot
* Other players should be unable to access Woby's inventory, this extended feature would work amazingly for any kleptomaniacs out there
* Some perk to do with traps to make for a more interesting playstyle? Traps set by him could deal more damage or take less durability when used, something to bring out the survivalist aspect to fit with his boy scout idea
* Being stung by bees and maybe other insects could cause allergies for him for a brief while, that would be his main drawback, so no need for a hat that's basically useless, no need to make him losing sanity from taking damage, drawbacks in vein of health and sanity are done to death

Woodie (B tier)
* Make him able to eat wood for hunger but gain wereform transformation points when doing so, if eating normal food however he could reduce it, allowing him to stay in human form when full moon hits even if quickly moving towards transformation
* Increase the damage his axe does, a lot of new players use Lucy as a weapon, not realising just how awful damage it does by comparison
* Make lucy throwable like in The Forge, maybe for even more damage
* Rework the wereform curse to be a significant but fun drawback in some way, you could take use of it, but at a cost, I would do away with his additional transformations since they kind of ruin the character

Maxwell (A tier)
* Fix the AI of the shadow puppets, currently if you have more than one digging puppet, they will all go for the same one and even the one you try to dig up yourself
* Change the puppets to be more like the single player counterpart, all the same puppets without specialisation, all you have to do is click to read the Codex Umbra, click to do an action once, and then the puppets will continue doing it while in range of you, a lot like pigs act when it comes to chopping down trees
* Make the puppets impossible to kill by anything or anyone besides the Maxwell player who controls them
* During combat, puppets could transform into slashing machines after you hit an enemy, a lot like the shadow puppet attack in The Forge, could be great for stunning enemies

Warly (A tier)
* Chef pouch should just be a backpack for the head slot and an item only he can equip and carry
* The portable pot's recipes should all become available to cook in the pot by anyone for clarity's sake, but the portable pot's ingredient slots could be reduced to 3, meaning you may lose out on some dishes, but most you could cook with reduced amount of ingredients, like meaty stew for only 1 monster meat and 2 meat, or pierogi with 1 of each required ingredient, throwing out the need for fillers when using it

Wilson (C tier)
* Give the ability to craft blueprints for crafting recipes he has learnt (whether they are boss drop blueprints or some crafting station unlock)
* Gain more sanity from prototyping?
* If you are to add a drawback, it could be that of magic, maybe he drains more sanity from using magic items to give into his fear from that kind of stuff, since the character may be more for beginners, magic won't really be on their mind until later on

Keeping him mostly as is should be fine, some have pointed out to not mess around with the character too much

Webber (B tier)
* Ability to befriend spider queens or even tame them and ride on them like beefalo
* No other ideas... even with this ability Webber would serve no unique playstyle purpose, just a unique playstyle for purposes already covered by other characters. Any further ideas?

Wurt (no rating)
No particular ideas, the problems are just the resource, time and upkeep cost to make it even slightly worth the while to play as this character and while you can make surf n' turf farms, they are useless to you as she can only eat vegetables, if there are any ideas players more experienced with the character than I have, maybe there are some ways to make the character unique and interesting to play as without it being a huge unnecessary hurdle

Some characters I have not mentioned at all, either because they are roughly ok or are desirable to play as for one reason or another already, Wormwood being a prime example as the ideal farmer character even if his perks could be buffed, I'm just unsure how. But maybe some Wormwood mains, if there are any who have played way too much of the game have ideas for him, or other unmentioned characters.

May be too long to read, but I organized this somewhat to get a discussion going too. Some of these traits would really make many other characters powerful in their own unique way, like Winona for example. The catapults just make her a swappable character, and having that isn't bad if there is also a reason to play as the character, namely the traits I mentioned. She would then be the character most would rely on for crafting and repairing anything really, people will want Winona on the team, instead of switching to the character once then never again. You could still switch over to just craft and repair a bunch of stuff, but normally having one player around as that character would be more convenient and useful overall than just swapping over. It would take way too many resources in endgame to get to a point where she might become a swap character again.
