Battlesongs are printed materials related to books and feather pencils are considered stationery, so it makes sense these can be put into bookcases as well? Well because don't starve does have a lotta subtle yet not-too-useful details in its games XD and it does make the ecology side of the games interesting, or maybe it's just one of the explanations I can come up with.
