Bug reporting built into the game

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I just realized that not every person playing those early versions of Oxygen Not Included would post his bug on forum. Sometimes it's about putting more effort in taking screenshots and uploading savegame or sometimes it's about awareness to public posts.

Wouldn't that be great if that person can actually post a bug inside a game? Like providing description and just checking box to upload savegame? It's more anonymous and much faster than registering etc. Of course those reports won't be that accurate like carefuly crafted posts on forum, but it would provide huge ammount of information, what leads to many fixes. It can be separated from reports here anyway.

What do you think about it guys?

That is what happens for crash bugs. The game immediately uploads the last lines of the log file (no specific player data) to a crash report and has the option of a small description if you don't want to sent the default "oops! A black hole ate my game" text. Any other bug that doesn't need immediate attention (just imo, because you can still play the game) usually needs more information including screenshots/video of gameplay and save game file of the specific moment the bug is happening in order to be resolved and it could still be difficult to reproduce the bug in a different pc setup.

There are also too many "bugs" that are not actually bugs but how the game works. If too many of those ended up (as they now do in the current bug tracker) in a closed bug tracker, I think it would make a mess of any attempt to fix actual bugs. And in the end (just my opinion though) if a player can't take 10-20 minutes out of their time to register to an official forum of the game and file a bug report, why should a developer waste any time reading too many bug reports that are not even bugs.

I had no idea there is a way to send crash bugs immediately, honestly I never encountered 'black hole', but I mainly meant such situations. I agree with your point of view and if functionality like that arleady exists, but only for crashes - I think my thread can be closed. You're also right about overflowing bug tracker with not even bugs, what I didn't considered before. So nevermind!

Have a nice day
