It could be a casual event or a crisis factor at the end of the game.

As a casual event it could turn off or cause damage to the unprotected electrical network and/or deactivating rockets traveling for some time.
As a crisis factor at the end of the game a complicating factor to reach the temporal rift,  with/without a meteor shower or a blast of radiation (that would be more related to DLC) or all combined.

The concept would be to bring some complication to the machines or structures exposed in space ( a solar flare or EMP pulse , for example). They should be predictable and have a way to protect themselves (either in planning or a protection module on the spaceship).

I`d imagine solar flares would cause solar panels to produce extra power but cause them to overheat so that you`d have to cool them down. Alternatively you could just shield them by installing regular doors (would require something that can detect the flare).

Solar flares should also cause instant sunburn and maybe a spike of radiation.
