Tip: Liquid Meter Valves make great water clocks

Recommended Posts

Water clocks have been a staple for long duration timing in ONI for a long time. But the new liquid meter valves allow for simpler, smaller more accurate, and longer duration builds.

I've been using this in my current play through:

I put 10kg of water in, but you only really need a few grams.  The valve is set to 1g/s. The meter valve can then be set to whatever length of time of time you want to measure (e.g. 3 cycles = 1800s = 1.8kg).  The lower automation port is the output.  The top port is the resets the timer.  If you want a continuously cycling clock just connect the two.

The readout is also much simpler than alternatives:

You can read time remaining on mouse over and it shows both elapsed and remaining on click.

Pros:

  • 1s precision/accuracy
  • no clock drift (unlike buffer/filter based timers)
  • 500,000s = 833.33 cycle duration maximum
    • You can stretch it by 10x by using a 0.1g/s valve if you can live with 10s precision

Cons:

  • 10W power draw.  If the power is interrupted the timer will pause.  You might want to provide a backup battery for critical timers.
  • needs plastic for construction
