Steam Installing random version of mod

so for whatever reason, steam has been continually reverting one of my mods to a random deprecated version of said mod whenever it updates. This is making it nearly impossible to ensure the mod is working properly. Has anyone else ever had this problem and if so, what causes it and how do I fix it?
I ended up giving up and removing the mod from the steam workshop entirely so I could refresh with a version I know works so it can't break when randomly reverting, but this isn't really a great solution.
