How to return backup?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

On 09/13/2020 I went to the folder "documents / Klei / DoNotStarveTogether" and backed up all the files that were inside.

Today, 19/09/2020 I re-installed the game after formatting my computer (windows 10).

When playing the entire backup in there, the game does not open and displays the error in the image below.

I tried not to use the backup at the beginning and started a server in position 1, in an attempt to replace only the files in the cluster_1 folder.

However, now the game did not generate the clusters on the path I mentioned above, it creates inside another folder whose name is a huge number.

I tried to replace the cluster 1 that is inside it, but then the server does not start.

It looks like the game had some updates this week. Was this the problem? Did I lose my world?

Is this when launching the world or from opening the game itself? If you had mods enabled in that world, they're most likely have been uninstalled when formatting your computer because the mods are stored in a separate file, so this might have caused issues if they were suddenly disabled. Either that, or mods could have caused the crashed, so try disabling all of them. I am not familiar enough with lua to understand what caused the crash from your image.

I forgot what this was called, but it's a number that steam assigns to your account (I'm assuming you're playing on steam) so that way if there's more than one account using your computer, the files can be read separately. Inside these folders should be your cluster files. Within the cluster_1 folder, check to see if you have the master and caves folder (unless you're playing with caves off). There should be a folder named "save" which is where your world data is stored. Simply make a quick switch with the backup "save" file and the newly created one, in both the Master and Caves folders. Make sure to replace the modoverrides.lua (again in both folders) if you had mods enabled and either edit cluster.ini directly or replace it with the backup one as well.

If I'm not wrong or had forgotten any steps, then this should work (this is what I do when switching world files on dedicated servers). Hope this helps!

Thank you for your help!

But it still didn't work.
Yes, I am using steam and yes I only used two mods, one for translation and one for geometry.

I followed your tutorial, but when starting the server it shows the error in the image below. I tested with and without the mods.

Any other ideas?

From your image, it looks like you're trying to start a new world, if I'm not mistaken, meaning that the problem with the backup world that you had is most likely fixed. I'm not sure, but I believe that the failed dedicated server starting might just be a temporary issue, I ran into it once before but I forgot if I did something to fix it or if I had to just wait it out. You could try to look around for other sources to find how people with the same problem could have dealt with it, this could range from the remaining space on your computer, to a potential block caused by an antivirus program.

Anyway, check the mods page to make sure they're up to date or if the comments at the bottom say anything regards to crashing. I doubt that this was the case since there wasn't an update in the recent week, but there was just an announcement showcasing the next one, and it seems like the mods that you're using aren't game changing ones that could potentially cause crashes.

Unlike your first image, it seems that this isn't an error due to misplaced files, so I think you're on the right track. The first one seemed to me like a crash upon opening the game rather than launching a world (I don't think you specified yet), but considering that you tried both with and without mods, it's more likely that it is a world launching error, and what is happening might just be a temporary issue.

Perhaps you could try in offline mode / alone settings? This could also be a problem caused by an unstable connection if the world was open to other players (I'm pretty sure it wouldn't affect the host but rather the other players who join. It's still worth a try though).

If none of this works, it might just be a technical issue that you would have to ask other more experienced people or Klei support for help.
