gracefool
I recently started playing ONI, and the first thing that struck me was how overlays and plans don't match up. Re-ordering overlays would make so much more sense for learning the keys. Currently: 1/F1 Base / Oxygen 2/F2 Oxygen / Power 3/F3 Power / Temperature 4/F4 Food / Materials 5/F5 Plumbing / Light 6/F6 Ventilation / Plumbing 7/F7 Refinement / Ventilation 8/F8 Medicine / Decor 9/F9 Furniture / Germs 0/F10 Stations / Farming -/F11 Utilities / Room How much easier to remember would it be as: 1/F1 Base / Room 2/F2 Oxygen / Oxygen 3/F3 Power / Power 4/F4 Food / Farming 5/F5 Plumbing / Plumbing 6/F6 Ventilation / Ventilation 7/F7 Refinement / Materials 8/F8 Medicine / Germs 9/F9 Furniture / Decor 0/F10 Stations / Light -/F11 Utilities / Temperature 1 & 10 aren't really matchable (and 7 is iffy), but everything else just goes together like it should. This is without changing any of the plans & number keys. Alternatively, without changing any of the overlays & function keys: 1/F1 Oxygen / Oxygen 2/F2 Power / Power 3/F3 Utilities / Temperature 4/F4 Refinement / Materials 5/F5 Stations / Light 6/F6 Plumbing / Plumbing 7/F7 Ventilation / Ventilation 8/F8 Furniture / Decor 9/F9 Medicine / Germs 0/F10 Food / Farming -/F11 Base / Room I prefer the former since it's nice to have Base as #1, but whatever floats your puft. Another option would be to keep Base in the first position using the ` key (the key before 1 on a US keyboard), so replace that last line with: `/F11 Base / Room Whaddya reckon? ... Another related feature that would be really nice is secondary plan selection with keys - that is, the ability to use the number keys by themselves to select something to build. For instance if you press 2 and then 1 you would select an oxygen diffuser, or 3, 2 to build wire. This would make it way faster to build things, and many other games do this. The only downside is if you press the first number to select a menu, and then change your mind - but you could just select anything (e.g. 1), or press escape, to start again.
