Make tech harder to research but discoverable in ruins

I feel like a problem with research is that once your base is early game stable it is far too easy to work your way through the entire research tree (apart from the final space techs). I think it might be nice if the mid-late game tech required around ten times the research, but this was balanced with the opportunity to discover certain random techs in the various ruins spread throughout the map. It would make the mid game a bit more of a challenge, as well as provide impetus to explore the map more thoroughly. This research requirement could also be toggleable in the difficulty settings.
