Diagonal movement options for non-airborne entities

Recommended Posts

It'd be a great boon in that there'd be far more variation on possible base design, instead of mostly rectangular shaped bases optimized for existing game mechanics. It feels like much of this stems from how "steps" made from tiles seem to be very taxed since dupes take so long to climb even single steps. I don't know if there's a real reason why smooth diagonal movement is reserved for gases, critters, and meteors.

Here are some random ideas. I didn't take the time to mangle most of them with ONI irony :)

Waterslide

- downward travel only and needs liquid flow from input

- grants sopping wet

Zipline

- downward travel only

- must wait for transportation devices to reel back up

Stairs

- like current tile steps but better (maybe on par with ladder + tiles)

- don't count as foundation for structures

Escalator

- probably won't replace tubes for traveling upwards at breakneck speeds but it'd be a high tech alternative to stairs

Bounce pad / Landing pad

- consumes stamina to give dupes more jump height and length without ladders, as long as there is a landing pad within range

- another structure that can be potentially made out of reed fiber

- powered version: dupe cannon

Slow teleporter

- phases dupes through all matter at an incredibly moderate speed, arriving at other teleporters or specifically designated spots

- teleporting costs stamina and applies a "dazed" debuff (reduced athletics, learning, etc), the severity of both depending on teleportation distance

- consumes massive amounts of power and possibly materials, generates tons of heat, etc

- slow recharge, can hold enough charge for very few uses at a time, and can only tp one dupe at a time

I know some of these ideas sounds pretty silly but tbh I'd be happy if grounded diagonal movement would be implemented at all.
