Am i dumb to think the cache (*size*) and thus implicitly also RAM (*speed/*transacations) to be the primary bottlenecks?
Don't get confused, it's not a RAM *size* nor a cache *speed* issue. Just consider the following;

Just add up all the information you need to store per tile in terms of bytes, multiply with the map dimensions (256*384), marvel at how even the most basic estimates results in amount of data that blows most CPU L3 caches out. This is information that needs to be processed many times a second. Continuously being fetched from RAM (stores are not the problem, only reads) to populate cache -- even WITH SIMD extensions (whether that uses cache or not). Unless they find ingenious methods of packing this data into something that is extremely compact then the speed is going to be pretty much limited to RAM reading speed and cache size (read access patterns). And still we haven't taken the debris lists, pipe lists and other misc items into consideration.

I FOUND THE BOTTLENECK!!! The ram frequency matter, changed it from 1333 to 1600, from 18-20FPS  to 23-25FPS.

SO...I grabbed the Save from an earlier post Test.sav...

At first is only ran at 15 FPS on my machine...BUT Did you know you were venting the entire world?? that seamed like a crap ton of calculations so i started closing all the holes at the top of the base...took some doing as i didn't know all the inner workings of this base...WHEN i sealed the entire map from space i get 40 FPS!!! Also that Shove Vole is killing your FPS .

There is a Vacuum Behind the locker . Took a min to find...and that little spot just below it.

Next 2 are a comparison shot same place goes from 20 FPS to 36 Just showing the pathing for the Shovole Vole.

You have a lot of critters...lol

I had fun.

My system is OLD (as am i) Win 7 x64 |16 GB RAM | I7 2600 k @3.4 ghz | Built and installs from 2010 ish.

I closed all the holes at the top of the base and killed all the shine bugs, ( those was not there on purpose, i took one from the printing pod, but i forgot that i had dreckos that drop phosphorite, so i was finishing the space and when i looked at my base i had like 20-30 of them xD)

I overclocked my ram to 1866 too and now i have 34-38 FPS on x3.

For reference, I get 40-45 at 3x with an i9700k/32gb/2060rtx. I think that's okay for a map of this size.

Not many games are able to multithread to 8~16 logical cores perfectly. So, single threaded performance will always be very important. That said, I think there's still plenty of room for them to do domain decomposition on the physics simulation.

Ram speed? (frecuency)? I think that is the bottleneck on higth end computers
