ADuLy
With the promised release of DS multiplayer (a guarantee of beta testing after PAX), I wanted to attempt recording the game live as I play with my friend and upload it to Youtube. So I opened up MSI Afterburner, Don't Starve, and created a new world to test video recording. I hit the record button and played the game for about 2 minutes and then i stopped the recording and checked to see the quality of it, right away I noticed in the folder that my recordings are directed to, the clip i had jsut recorded had a black screen for a thumbnail, I didn't think much of it until I opened up the video clip to play it and I realized that MSI Afterburner pretty much recorded a black screen for those 2 minutes. The games sound was playing in the background clearly and with no lagg, and when I started recording, nothing came up in the game, everything ran perfectly, so i don't understand why the recorded clip was just a black screen.Any help would be appreciated, please respond asap if you know how to fix this issue or have encountered it yourself, also please do not ''recommend'' that I use other screen capturing software because I want to fix this problem and continue using MSI because I have no ingame fps drops or performance drops, and I believe it's the best recording software anyways. Thanks for your time, feedback is appreciated!
Quady14
I use MSI Afterburner for my videos as well, but haven't experienced a similar issue. Could you list your Video Capture settings? I may be able to help you more based off of your settings. Here's my settings for what it's worth: Video Format - MJPG compressionContainer Format - Audio Video Interleave AVIQuality - 90%Frame Size - 16:9 720pFramerate - 30 FPSFramerate Limit - Disabled Multithreaded optimization - AutomaticCrop Video Dimensions (to make it multiples of 16) - uncheckedEnable Gamma Correction - uncheckedEnable MJPG Decoder - uncheckedUse Dedicated Encoder Server - unchecked Then there's some audio settings and the video capture hotkeys but those are unrelated I should think. If none of this helps and it isn't actually an issue with MSI Afterburner, I would suggest you try recording Don't Starve in windowed mode or messing with its resolution settings, that may be what's causing you to record blank space. Hope these suggestions help! I used to have some trouble recording Don't Starve but I haven't had any issue recently except for the fact that it refuses to show the purple dot circle that indicates when you've started recording. All the other games I record show it but Don't Starve is the one game that remains stubborn about not telling me whether I'm recording or not. Quady14
Hmm... So our settings are more or less identical, I don't think it's MSI Afterburner, or if it is it's not an issue with your settings, but maybe with something else... Do you have RivaTuner Statistics Server running when you try to record? I think MSI runs that alongside itself automatically and it assists with detecting the active window you want to record in. Pretty sure it's also what makes the purple hoop appear when you start recording. Not positive about all that, but if you're missing it that could be another potential issue. If not though, like I mentioned, try running Don't Starve in windowed mode and see if you get any more positive results. If that still doesn't do the trick, maybe try uninstalling MSI and reinstalling, as maybe there's some unknown fluke that's causing this issue for you. You don't have the issue with any other games do you? I know there's a couple games that MSI gets very fussy at me when I try to record them, Don't Starve used to give me a similar problem, but then it was fine for no discernible reason. I notice a lot of recording programs can get weird like that occasionally.
jbeetle
have you tried witching between fullscreen and windowed mode? Windowed normally works better if there's problems.
ADuLy
I have rivatuner running but im not sure about windowed mode. I'll try tomorrow
ADuLy
I tried recording several times in windowed and full screen mode, alternating between the two, and I got the same results; black screen, background audio playing clearly. Just out of curiosity, do you record fullscreen or windowed, Quady14? And does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can fix this issue? If it helps, I record League of Legends videos in fullscreen and it records perfectly fine which is why Im wondering why Don't Starve in specific isn't recording properly. Quady14
I record Don't Starve in fullscreen mode myself, better resolution and all. Sorry none of the suggestions have worked though. I'm really a little dumbfounded. You don't have to but maybe if you tried uninstalling and reinstalling MSI Afterburner altogether? Even then I don't know that this would fix your problem. Perhaps it could be an issue with your operating system, or Don't Starve's properties? I'm pretty much stumped as it stands. Again, apologies I couldn't be of more help. This is an issue I've had in the past but I'm really not sure what fixed it for me, and heck, I'm pretty sure there's a couple other games I own that just don't like being captured by MSI normally, so maybe the program still a bit finnicky with some games more-so than others.
