Problem with the auto compilier

Hello all. I'm new to modding and I've managed to do alright so far. But this week I ran into a big problem. It is my understanding that DS will create a .zip file in the anim/ folder of your mod if you have a .smcl file inside the exported/ folder. However, this never happens for me, I get an error instead when I try to run my mod. This error is so bad that I can duplicate the error with existing working mods.
Below is a list of steps I've gone through to reproduce the error with as little interference as possible.

  1. I uninstalled and reinstalled Don't Starve.
  2. I removed all mods from the mod folder except for Screecher. That mod will not go away no matter how many times I delete it.
  3. I added the Shipwrecked version of the Extended Sample Character mod that Klei made to the mod folder (LINK TO MOD)
  4. I have confirmed that the settings.ini file has the line "autocompiler_enabled = true".
  5. If I run the Sample Character mod as is then everything is fine. Everything works as intended.
  6. However, if I remove either esctemplate.zip or examplefloatableitem.zip from anim/ then Don't Starve throws an error. Below is a complete copy of the log.txt file. The error starts with:  "...m/steamapps/common/dont_starve/data/scripts/util.lua:333: Could not find an asset matching anim/esctemplate.zip in any of the search paths."

As far as I know, this error should never happen because the auto compiler should created the needed zips from the provided .smcl files before it gets to this point.

I can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. What is causing this problem? Is there a way I can see what the auto compiler is doing or not doing? Any chance there is some other way I can compile the files?

So I'm going by assumption, your not using the examplefloatableitem prefab are you? Since the error in the hidden content is searching for the zip file of the floatable item and with it being stated in the modmain, the floatable item lua is active on start up. So remove the examplefloatableitem in the modmain prefabfiles section if you don't need it, otherwise for your character zip file its confusing to say the least as the autocompiler doesn't always succeed in creating the zip files from a scml file. To fix it well I don't know if my advice is taken at all but its one of the body parts not being recognized during the autocompiler building (on mine its the armupper folder) and needs to be refreshed for a lack of better words (re-edit the png and export it). As for seeing what the autocompiler is doing is tricky as the black window that pops up does show what its doing but it goes pretty fast (you can pause it by clicking on it) and any deeper is beyond my knowledge. Another way to compile the files is another person's compiler, otherwise theres no real other way.

I'm not trying to use examplefloatableitem at all, I just wanted it to compile. I commented out the name in modmain.lua and ran the mod. It runs but still doesn't compile.

So the auto compiler is a separate window? I've NEVER seen a black window pop up when I start DS. I'm wondering if my anti-virus is blocking it. I've never seen an alert from it but it could be possible. Is the auto compiler separate application from DS? I really wish there was a suite of tools that handled all of this in a simpler fashion.

Yeah it looks like the gif under compiling on the tutorial for the mod, usually the autocompiler is located (if you downloaded don't starve mod tools from steam) in the search path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Mod Tools\mod_tools\autocompiler.exe. Otherwise the autocompiler starts every time the game runs. The autocompiler is technically a separate window but its still part of the game (even for don't starve together) so if anything all it does is build files into machine code so the computer knows how to implement them into the game.

its under your library-tools and it should be don't starve mod tools. You'll need to right click it and "install game" once thats done the folder will appear in the search path I mentioned last post. With that installed you can run the autocompiler without opening the game multiple times. It also has spriter and fmod_designer (for sounds) inside the folder just food for thought.
