Most of the time game crashes on start

I'm trying to get the game running on Linux (Endeavour which is basically Arch). In rare cases it can launch to main menu, show first-start animation and seems to work (I didn't try to actually get into the game though) but most of the time it just crashes before even showing main menu.

Steam is launched from terminal to check for possible messages - nothing there, game just closes. Steam uses default runtime.

Mods were disabled in Steam (Workshop tab of app settings) and removed from disk (both their dirs and mods.json) to be extra sure.

Attached player logs seem to look fine until it just crashes.

The only thing that looks suspicious in log for me except a final fatal - it uses OpenGL and complains about worker jobs with it, while I would expect Vulkan for a modern game.

Other Unity games I've tried seem to work without issues. Also ONI runs just fine on the same PC in Windows.

I'm out of ideas because of lack of information: no errors of missing libs, driver failures or something like that.


Steps to Reproduce

- launch the game the usual way from Steam

- if it launches fine at the first run - exit it and launch again

There's a Unity bug we're currently trying to resolve on older CPUs. Yours is from 2011 and is affected. I'll send you a file and instructions for a workaround. Let's track the bug here.

Thanks for trying the file I sent you. Sounds like a different issue than the one I linked to. We don't ship Vulkan so only Open GL is available on Linux. I'm not sure what to recommend looking at your log. 

Are you able to play the game through Proton on Linux?

Didn't think of that at the moment. Yes, Windows version via Proton Experimental runs fine - I didn't try to get back all mods and try my saves but it manages to load to main menu several times in a row without issues, unlike native one.

Some things that can give you hints hopefully:

When I first tried native version some time ago, it managed to load to main menu on the first run but crashed when I switched it to windowed mode and tried to resize it. It doesn't seem to be the actual crash reason though because I've tried resetting it to defaults, and when I was fiddling with it today, once or twice it loaded to menu both in fullscreen and windowed, and resize happened without issues. But next restarts ended in crashes even just keeping default fullscreen mode.

I was suspecting mods but as said in first post, I've disabled mods in Steam and removed from disk, so it should be a clean game.

One time today it happened to load after I've deleted both prefs and kplayerprefs.yaml to reset settings to default and I thought it can actually be related to some settings cache or video mode changes on load. But no, when I've tried that again it just crashed anyway even with default settings.

Have you encountered any issues on the previous update, U57? You can access it on the public_previous_update branch.

If you stay in windowed mode has it crashed? You can edit kplayerprefs.yaml, in the int section "FullScreen: 0" to force it into windowed mode.
