Wrong temperature calculation on Conveyor rail

memeenjoyer
  • Branch: Live Branch Version: Windows Known Issue

Issue shown in video recording. 20kg Niobium on conveyor rail inside a ceramic tile jumps down in temperature (from 200+ down to 100C). Adjacent tiles are ceramic or in vacuum. Closest cold tile is not attached to any conveyor rail.

Issue persists even after reloading. Not sure exactly why that is, what mechanic is in play, or if I did something wrong
I noticed the issue because my second steam chamber never got to 125C and found out that I'm losing heat this way. The recording demonstrates that the heat didn't go into anything else(gases, liquid in pipes, tiles, etc) but the temperature went down anyway

This is from the current live build (not the upcoming March update or beta release)

Some QoL and DGSM mods used, but nothing related to temperature/cosmetics mechanics

Steps to Reproduce

Pleas see video recording for demonstrating the bug/issue. Didn't do anything new or special

The provided save file is when I started the recording. If anyone would like to play around and get more niobium without waiting for the chamber to cool down, simply connect the automation wire from the signal switch to the autosweeper next to the bottle emptier + turn on all signal switch in the chamber

User Feedback

Debris exchanges heat with the tile it is currently in, and for if the tile it is currently in is not vacuum, and the tile below the debris is solid it also exchanges some of the heat with the tile bellow, currently this is the case even while the debris is on a solid conveyor rail, until that changes you can avoid this issue by having the conduit rail avoid going through the tile above the joint plate, as what you are noticing is the debris exchanging heat with the joint plate bellow.

“Until”? 😱

I also shudder at the thought that debris (on conveyor rails) exchanging heat with the tile that's below it (currently accepted as normal behavior, in my experience) has been thrown into "known issue" territory. I surmise high potential for builds breaking if this changes.

Technically it's a bug and not an exploit at all. Any update will always break some previous build. This xkcd comes to mind: https://xkcd.com/1172/. What would make more sense is that the debris exchange temperature with the tile it's currently in first and that tile exchange heat with surrounding tiles (or to a temp shift plate, a bridge in that tile, a large signal distributor, or ice maker). The fact that it is in a vacuum shouldn't change that basic fact
