UI frozen, but gameplay still running

Was running a colony on 3x speed when suddenly the whole UI froze -  clicking on items still made sounds (and sounds from the game continue to occur), but no actions available and the UI didn't scroll.  Unfortunately occurred as I was off main part of colony so unsure whether there was any gameplay still occurring, but day/night sounds continue to occur as I write this.  Alt-tabbed out of the UI to switch to Chrome, but then UI didn't materialize when I alt-tabbed back to the game.

I then killed the game through the 'close (x)' via the taskbar.

My log was filled with 1 million lines (84M) of messages such as "d3d11: failed to create staging 2D texture w=22 h=22 d3dfmt=2 [887a0005]" - have included the main parts of the log below... :

Steps to Reproduce
Haven't found a way to reproduce...restarted the game several times, clicked and scrolled around, nothing like this occurred again.

It looks like the game ran out of video memory. What graphics card does your machine have?
