U52 broke my colony.

Due to the update of lumber to wood without grandfathering the former several of my older and still used colonies broke as the wood melted on heat transport loops.

Not sure if it would be possible to fix it without breaking newer save files. But for future changes to elements it would be great to grandfather the old elements. Similar to older buildings that aren't available any more but the code still supports.

It seems you were using lumber to harvest heat. I can recommend using refined carbon instead as a cheap alternative. At least that's what I did with my old save during the beta phase (AKA: I didn't update the game during that time and did some emergency adjustments to make the save "compliant" with the changes. The hatch farm now has AC )

I still have to revisit using data banks as a heat transfer medium, the consistency of getting 20kg packets on the rails was iffy at that time. (Even a full conveyor loader had weird packets coming up :hopelessness:)

There are other conventional sources of genetic ooze for use on rails, but lumber was without a doubt the cheapest. Ask your nearest dupe doctor for more insight on this.

Thank you. But the reason I posted it as a bug is to make the developers aware they made an undocumented breaking change instead of deprecating the old lumber element.

I'll partially agree with you on the implications of the change. This is the note given in the beta announcement:

Describes element renaming from lumber to wood only.

In fairness, documenting the upcoming change more thoroughly back then in the post would've been great, but given the amount of changes in that announcement we can see that it can be overwhelming just to get to that point. Curiosity got the better of me and I did a verification of the implications of an element rename to be sure. The rarity of such a change did merit it.

In my opinion, such change would've needed to specify the new SHC/TC characteristics of the element as well as any phase change related data. This would've constituted fair warning (a more complete one :D ).

That will be all for my two bits on this topic.
