From what I understand, it is intended that Mealwood plants are not renewable as of the Thermal Update and you have to rely on the seeds you acquire. However, it seems that you can just dig up seeds before their last harvest and get a full new set of harvests.
Seems like an exploitable bug to me, as the change seems to be to encourage alternative food source usage (which mind you, I love).
Steps to Reproduce
Plant Mealwood in a planter and dig up the plant before the third harvest to acquire a seed.
