Song of the moo crashes on load

Ever since the song of the moo update, when I first load the game, about half the time I see the main screen and get half a second of audio before the game just crashes.  Poof, it's gone.   No "a black whole ate my game" or anything.  Sometimes I have to try to launch the game 3 or 4 times before it doesn't crash and lets me load my save.
