I have been previewing recent maps to check which geysers spawned and noticed there were no wheezeworts. Now I never looked for that specific thing so I don't know if they always grow in but that seems unlikely.
[edit] Later on upon physically finding the proper biome I found some wheezeworts on a previously apparently empty map. It appears that they visually do not spawn in the same frame they are revealed. Since I had it paused they did not become visible. Letting it run shows them.
