I have a configuration of 8 Liquid Reservoirs to filter water going into my base. All are in a solid 2000kg of chlorine. Before it was less chlorine though I was determined to try and figure out if this was a bug or if there were random germs getting through. After the Reservoirs I originally output it through a germ sensor and to a liquid shutoff that would either let clean water through or send germ water back into the first liquid reservoir to make a second trip through the system. As this bug would randomly creep back up and I'd watch the germ sensor detection number climb on it's own even though the pipes before hand detected zero germs, eventually the sensor would count all the way up to a hundred and would likely continue if I allowed it.
Things I've tried is, I've put a liquid valve on the end the reduce the water flow just to ensure that the liquid reservoirs fill up and I've put another liquid shutoff directly after this and then another germ sensor just to test if the germ sensor location was the issue. The new germ sensor does the same thing. It's random as far as I can tell, though it will randomly start counting germs that are not there. This clogs the pipes and halts oxygen production causing my dupes all sorts of issues if this goes too long without being caught (because I'm on another planet setting things up). I've since put a Liquid Pipe Element Sensor and an Automated Notifier to tell me when my water pipes dry up. This notifier is appropriately named "***** Germ Sensors" so that I know the bug has come back and I need to restart the game in order to temporarily resolve the issue. I then need to allow however many germs the sensor is detecting to pass manually, because it saves the detected germs after the game restart, though the second sensor seems fine after the same water package passes through.
Now, I'm not sure if it's the germ sensors themselves or if it could be the packets of water being bugged somehow. The packets don't show as having germs with the germ overlay and I would think that after going through 7 liquid reservoirs (8 if it was rejected to run the gauntlet again) that if the bug originated from my steam turbines over a Geo Vent C-15 that if a faulty water packet in the pipes are created, I'd imagine it's due to being pulled out of the steam turbines. I'm unsure how food poisoning germs survive being in steam and sucked through steam turbines, but... okay? Mental note that steam cleaning IRL is likely a lie. Anyway, after the steam turbines the packets of water go through a cooling loop and into two liquid reservoirs submerged in Nectar, then these eventually make it to the Liquid Reservoirs in Chlorine where the germ sensor fail to work correctly after a random length of time.
My configuration works fairly well and killing all the food germs before leaving the chlorine room of liquid reservoirs, so I likely don't need the germ sensors. Just wanted to inform that if this was ever fixed, and I haven't looked other than seeing a 2022 post, that this is still an issue within the germ system.
Also, why on earth can we not see different overlays with the germ overlay? I wish we could see the Plumbing or Ventilation overlay in addition to the germ overlay. I know there's a check box for the germ overlay that says pipes, but it doesn't show the pipe overlay without looking for a mod. I would have imagined this would be base game stuff. I find it quite annoying trying to use the germ overlay and even with the Liquid Pipes selected in this overlay, it doesn't show me liquid pipes as it does with the Plumbing Overlay. Would be nice if either the Germ Overlay showed Liquid Pipes or Gas Pipes in a similar fashion as using the Plumbing or Ventilation Overlay, or have a tick box under the Plumbing or Ventilation overlay to show germs. Either or both would be wonderful additions to the game.
