Game won't start!

After a recent game update (March 2026 Bug Fix Update), I can't access the game. Any attempt to open the game itself results in an error (photo attached below). I've verified the integrity of my Steam files - everything is fine. I've checked the built-in Windows antivirus and it's not blocking access to the game. I've also unsubscribed from all previously installed mods and deleted them from the Klei folder. I've tried so many options, but none of them work. I really love this game and would like to play it again. I really hope someone can help me solve this problem. Thank you!

Steps to Reproduce

A developer has marked this issue as fixed. This means that the issue has been addressed in the current development build and will likely be in the next update.

I was experiencing this same issue. I was able to fix it by renaming the folder C:\Users\[ME]\Documents\Klei\OxygenNotIncluded to "OxygenNotIncludedBAK". This might be under a different path if you have OneDrive. The game started fine after renaming it, and the game then creates a new OxygenNotIncluded folder at that location. I then copied my "mods" and "save_files" folder from the BAK to the new ONI folder and everything continued to work and I was able to load my previous saves. Hope this works for you too.

It didn't help... unfortunately, I still get the same error as before. I created a new folder, but the game still won't launch. Are there any other options?

What version of Windows are you on? Press Windows Key + R and type "winver" then press Enter. Please include the detailed version info e.g. Windows 11 Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.7840).

Is your graphics driver up to date? Do you have any overlays enabled: Discord, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner etc.?

Windows 1909 (OS Build 18363.1556)
No, I disabled all possible programs, leaving only Steam running.

Looks like your Windows version is from 2019 and is out of date. The version of Unity we upgraded to requires Windows 10 version 21H1 (build 19043) or newer according to their documentation. If you're unable to update Windows we have created a permanent support branch available called unity2022_support with a password "unity2022support" with the previous release.

Reinstalling Windows really helped! The game works again. Thanks so much to everyone who responded to this issue, and especially to EricKlei. All the best!
