Very simple. I had unlocked the aforementioned painting and it didn't appear as something I could repaint a landscape canvas with. It appears as a portrait canvas instead:
After a repaint, I got this:
Note that the painting doesn't visually align with the grid.
Clicking on it, it is still reported as a portrait canvas and it still takes the same space as before repainting.
Steps to Reproduce
While having the relevant cosmetic unlocked, build a portrait canvas. See landscape canvas cosmetic in the repaint option list.

A developer has marked this issue as fixed. This means that the issue has been addressed in the current development build and will likely be in the next update.
