Eggs disappear instead of turning into rotten eggs

I collected some eggs by chopping down rainforest trees, and I left them on the floor of my house to wait for them to rot so that I could make gunpowder so that I could load my blunderbuss. But after several in-game days, checking with the eggs now and then to see their rate of spoilage and seeing that they were almost rotten, I came back and discovered that they just disappeared when they were supposed to turn into rotten eggs instead.
