If you are able to move a lantern to your offhand slot without moving it to a different inventory location, then you will be able to use it while holding other items. Works the same exact way with bottle lanterns.
Steps to Reproduce
1. Hold a lantern in your hand slot
2. Click on it while holding it to move it to your offhand slot
3. Pick up another item off the ground using your item collection key (spacebar)
4. You can hold both a lantern and another item at the same time
