Poison Birchnut Trees become passive after moving away from them

When a Poison Birchnut Tree spawns, if the player moves a large distance away, it will no longer be aggressive. It can then be chopped down safely. I assume this behavior is unintended, as the Ancient Herald exhibited this as well (and was subsequently fixed).


Steps to Reproduce

Spawn Poison Birchnut Tree, and move several screens away. When you return, it will no longer attack.
