Wolfgang efficiency and tool usage

I don't know if it's working efficiency-related or critical hit-related, but here is the situation: 

Had a 40% axe I was saving for two Living Trees, landed a critical hit on the first one, and the durability decreased to 19%.

I'm not sure if this is how it was supposed to work, but felt this was worhty of a report either way.
