Small birds aren't able to board boats, unlike other companion mobs. Other mobs such as pigs, catcoons, frogs, and chester can ride boats.
This applies to Lavae and tallbirds as well! I know you don't want Lavae on a boat but they should be able to cross them for bridges!
Steps to Reproduce
Have a companion Smallbird/Lavae.
Realize they can't board boats or cross boat bridges with you.
