Mushrooms in the Caves don't regenerate

"Even the Mushtrees regenerate."

I've never seen this happen. What's the criteria in which they regen?

They do seem to regenerate in caves, but it takes forever for them to get back to their original amount. Unsure if this intended but I doubt it:
