Malbatross immediate despawn

I was fishing in the shoals trying to fight malbatross, when it finally showed up it destroyed my mast and flew away, despawning. It all happened in less than 10 seconds. The AI for the boss seemingly ignored me and despawned before I could land a single hit.

 

I'm unsure if it's a bug per se, but that being the intended behavior would be extremely lame. 

Steps to Reproduce

Fish in shoal, get unlucky.

It despawns if no more fish are in the shoal. I don’t really understand the point of this mechanic and have pulled all of my hair out trying to engage with the boss before it flies away.
