Heavy delay mounting a steering wheel while moving

As the title says, I've been experiencing delays whenever I try to mount a steering wheel from anywhere further than right next to it.This is something that's been bugging me for a while, but there's a consistently long delay when you try to mount a steering wheel. It's kept me from using more than one sail on my boats because there's no way to avoid oncoming obstacles outside of just hugging the wheel at all times.
