DST [cavespreview] Bugs

  • Pending

First a minor issue:

I was hosting a server to try out the new caves preview (non-dedicated server) and animations and looting feels really laggy. I got a friend to connect to the server and try it out and he said it felt normal (he usually plays on my servers at ~60ms). As the host it felt awkward and laggy - my ping reported 0ms.

Multiplayer Bug:

It seems only the host can go between under and above ground. Me (host) going underground resulted in anyone connected being disconnected. And anyone trying to go underground (with me above ground) got an error message: "the server is not available", and was disconnected from the server. When trying to reconnect when I was under ground they received the same error message.

UPDATE (07/02/15 - 6.28pm):

Selecting game modes other than Survival (Wilderness, Endless) doesn't seem to work. The game defaults to Survival.

Steps to Reproduce
Create a non-dedicated server Have someone connect Have them try to go into a cave Have them try to connect while you are in a cave

User Feedback

Hosting like this takes quite a lot of CPU time-- you're running two server processes and a client process, and even on my 3.4 GHz quad-core processor this can get laggy if the world is cluttered. This causes what feels like lag (sometimes called processor lag to distinguish it from network lag). Your ping should actually be 0ms, but I would expect that your processor wasn't quite up to the load.

Thanks for the response,

Oh I didn't even consider that. It could be the case my computer is a little older (~3 years).

Specs:

  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.4GHz  3.90GHz
  • Installed memory (RAM): 16.0GB
  • System Type: 64-Bit Operating System (Windows 7)

It's not exactly lag. It's hard to explain, but stuff feels less responsive than in normal DST. E.g. Animations are less crisp and responsive, response time of move commands feels a little slower. Animations end slightly too late... It's not at all major, but it feels like something is "wrong" or a bit off with the game. FPS is normal, load times are normal. I'm not experiencing any frame drops or any major performance issues otherwise.

This is pretty much exactly how it feels on my computer while hosting a dedicated forest / caves server and playing on my client.

We have similar hardware too.  i7-4770 w/ 16g RAM.

I'm pretty sure it's exactly what @rezecib described.
