Cant attack on a tamed beefalo?

Hi, every time I tame a beefalo, no matter what their stats or what saddle I use, I cannot attack while on it, meaning I cant ever get to the Ornery beefalo and I cant even defend myself. I can use ranged weapons such as blow darts or an ice staff but this means im doing the damage, not the beefalo. Any time I hole a non ranged weapon and mouse over any attackable creature I only get the examine option. Where as my boyfriend can do either. He is playing with a controller and I with a mouse, if that helps. And while we do have a lot of mods on our server, we each have the same mods so it shouldnt be that affecting us.
