This seems to happen with most projectile enemies, Ewecus, Mactusk, Bishops, etc.
Once you step out of their range, they'll cancel their attack, resulting in an animation that looks like it failed to properly go through.
It comes off a bit unpolished. I'd imagine they could either go through with their attack until out of aggro distance, and/or they use a taunt/dismissive animation rather.
Steps to Reproduce
Running outside of a mob's attack range can sometimes result in a false attack animation.
