Deadly Brightshade infect Eggs or something related to Pengulls

During Winter it appears the thralls will move toward Pengull glaciers (Left of screen) and infest either the Pengulls themselves or the eggs that are hidden by the Pengulls. The Portal (Right of Screen) is relatively close as seen in this image.

Steps to Reproduce

Set season to Winter
Move toward coast line to spawn in Pengull Glacier
Move some distance away from the Glacier and spawn in a Rift
Wait for Brightshade Thralls to spawn from portal.

I'm going insane. I think this is a bug but I came across this in one of my worlds during my first few days.
