Item Details, F or C temperature in addition to Kelvin

Recommended Posts

Example: gives both the chosen temperature scale and the temperature in Kelvin. Mid dot and dash shown.

Reason: The Specific Heat Capacity and Thermal Conductivity aren't converted to the chosen temperature scale. These measurements are in Kelvin - the details could give better relation to the Kelvin temperature references of these two other properties without the need to convert them to the end user's chosen temperature scale.

The separator could be a dash or slash, or anything - I just couldn't separate the slash from anything when editing this rather small image.

The upside here is debuggers and gurus wouldn't need to change their unit system to see their Kelvin counterparts. It would already be there in the details.

Not everyone understands what kelvin is (I do, usually only people that like science knows what kelvin is) so.. I think it's a little bit pointless when not many people understand it.

Exactly - I think they should give us theses properties in terms that we can easily relate to or give us the simplest cross reference possible right there in the details.

The specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity are in terms that few gamers are going to understand. A side by side comparator may help familiarize them.

The real upshot is having the two scales there for the science types without having to go entriely Kelvin - debug mode is entirely Kelvin when you're playing with the debug painting, etc.

Yeah, now that I think about it, ONI is a scientific game, so this should include Kelvin because this is more of a scientific measurement which would actually fit in the gae perfectly.

They are not measured in Kelvin...they are measured in (J/g) or (W/m) PER DEGREE KELVIN. each degree of kelvin & celcius is the same unit...

Also it doesn't really work for Fahrenheit, since C to F conversion is not linear...so you end up having to use a constant as well, and this would just be more complicated for people imo.

If you don't know what Kelvin is...you will have zero clue what the numbers behind specific heat capacity or thermal conductivity means anyways. I think its great that Klei has these mechanics in their game, but it isn't meant to be understood by all players.

...then you would have a reference for it and how it relates to the temperature scale and how it relates to those two properties.

I doubt that's the case considering the ongoing changes to tooltips regarding item properties and thermal conductivity. If you're right in this case: it's a waste of their time to convey it as it is. If they want their players to understand the utility of materials then some adjustment needs to be made to manner in which details are described. Details should be details and not vague references, or properties which few gamers will understand.
