Overlay Effects Help

I wanted to add an overlay effect whenever a key is pressed, and taken off when pressed again.

I have the basic code for key pressing and activating "forcefield" overlays, but how do I do other items?

For example: I'm looking for a way to add the hauntedfx (that wavy color) whenever I press a key and have it stay up as long as I don't press it again.

Would I just need to recreate the hauntedfx(1) but put it as an asset? Thank you. This is really tough and I don't see it very much on any other mods.
