Small bird won't eat after hatching, attacks me until I die

I can't figure out how to feed my small bird after it hatches. I've tried using the give feature and dropping food, both berries and seeds. The bird just attacks me until I die. Maybe I'm missing something ? 

I'm using a Motorola Moto X Play, running android 6.0.1

Your smallbird or Tallbird mother's smallbird? 

It works fine to me.

I may be doing something wrong, but I stole a tallbird egg, hatched it, and it won't eat, just attacks . Kind of new to this , but from what I understand you are supposed to be able to raise the bird to adulthood before it attacks .
