Custom Character avatar crash

So, I was trying to make a character for Don't Starve together and I came across this issue from choosing my character in the menu;

In the sample character file I didn't get the Avatar section for images, just saveslot and selectscreen;

Also I'm having a tough time making higher resolution textures, they always come out as if I scribbled them with crayola crayons compared to the other modded and vanilla characters.

I do have photoshop cs6, but I just need to know how to make them a higher resolution instead of making them wayyyyyy smaller and horrible.
