Mmmm. Well the items aren't in your possession technically. Also, once you start doing something like adding chest inventories to your inventory (even if it's just for crafting) then you have to consider distances from the chests and so on, similar to the issue we had back when players opened chests, but walked away. Up to what distance should a player be able to access the chest's inventory before they're too far? So I would have to pass on this suggestion, but that's just my opinion.

I would say logically, the chest has to be open, not just nearby, and since chests self-close when you walk away, I think that particular issue of distance is already dealt with. This also removes the computational problem of determining what can be built with everything in your inventory PLUS everything in chests nearby, as it reduces it to a maximum of one chest. I would definitely make use of such a feature... I already put the ingredients for things I plan to build in chests together.
