I know it can be alot of work to invent enough random messages, but I really like the death system on Ancient Domains of Mystery. some examples of a Don't Starve version could be "Wilson survived for 20 days before he foolishly harassed a beehive.", "Wilson lived for 12 days, but forgot he was not fireproof." or "Willow enjoyed fire for 1 day before a spider nest became a tempting target." The developers could use a message pool associated with each monster or cause of death and generate a random response.It's not statistics per-se, but I think it would be fun to see what killed me each time.
